From the Soldier Marathon Race Director
Planning for the 2018 Soldier Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay Marathon, and 5K Race is coming along well and we expect outstanding races again this year. Thank you for registering and training hard for our races. Several runners have asked about hydration packs, headphones and strollers. Our planning committee has made decisions written below.
After reviewing the policy of the Boston Marathon and discussing it with our security, we have decided to allow fuel belts but not hydration packs. We will have 15 water stations along the course that provide water and Powerade. We hope all runners will enjoy the Soldier Marathon and appreciate everyone’s understanding of the need for these rules.
• Fuel belt is permitted (with small bottles one liter or smaller).
• Armband is permitted to carry cell phone or small camera.
• Hydration packs (such as CamelBak® or Thor®).
- Headphone is permitted. Please watch for instructions from volunteers if you cannot hear them.
Half Marathon and 5k Race
Strollers are allowed for the Soldier Half Marathon and the Soldier 5K Race. Runners pushing strollers must start at the back of the pack for the race and are asked to be careful when passing runners. Both the Soldier Half Marathon course and the Soldier 5K course have one-way traffic and the road is wide enough to allow passing if needed. Please note that My Team Triumph teams pushing a stroller will be allowed to start at the front of the pack of runners and will start early before the race to allow separation from the pack of runners.
Strollers are not allowed for the full Soldier Marathon. Miles 11 through 23 on the course will have runners on both sides of the Riverwalk outbound and returning, which creates a safety hazard for the runners if strollers were also on that section of the course.
Thank you for registering for the Soldier Marathon races. We look forward to another great year of races as we help Fort Benning celebrate its Centennial.
