A Letter from the Director

February 12, 2019

Welcome All Runners:

We invite you to participate in the 2019 Soldier Marathon, the Soldier Half Marathon or the Soldier 5k Race. This will be our 10th year of running the Soldier Marathon races. Our Planning Team appreciates your hard work in training and preparing for a long distance race. We are also runners and like to say the Soldier Marathon races are planned by runners for runners. We plan the Soldier Marathon races to give runners a great experience and to salute our soldiers.

This is also the 10th year of the National Infantry Museum. We invite all runners and guests while at the race to take a few minutes on the grounds of the National Infantry Museum to tour the Viet Nam Wall Memorial and the Global War on Terrorism Memorial as well as the Galleries inside the Museum. These memorials give us a deeper perspective and appreciation for our soldiers.

Columbus was very fortunate to be selected as the home of Fort Benning in 1918. Over the past 100 years every soldier in our nation has come to Fort Benning at some point in their service to receive training. We are very, very grateful for the sacrifices made by all the soldiers to preserve our precious freedoms, which we all know are not “free.” Freedom comes with a price, and too often it’s a very heavy price.

We could not plan and conduct the Soldier Marathon races without the support of our sponsors, our many volunteers, and the support of the National Infantry Museum, Fort Benning, Columbus, Phenix City, and we thank you all.

We are proud to have donated $300,000 to local military organizations since the inception of the Soldier Marathon races in 2010. Those organizations are the National Infantry Museum, Fort Benning’s MWR, Team Red White and Blue, and the House of Heroes.

We wish to thank all those who have made the Soldier Marathon races so successful.

Cecil Cheves,

Race Director

Announcing the 2018 Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race

The Soldier Marathon Race Committee and the National Infantry Museum are pleased to announce that the Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will continue next year on November 17, 2018.

The National Infantry Museum has just unveiled its new Global War on Terrorism Memorial which faces the existing Viet Nam Wall Memorial. The Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will be memorial races to commemorate those soldiers who have paid the ultimate price to protect our Nation’s freedoms as well as to give their families and runners the opportunity to celebrate those lives that were so well lived.

The Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will both start and finish on Heritage Walk (Avenue of Flags) as the races have in the past, with the Global War on Terrorism Memorial on one side and the Viet Nam Wall Memorial on the other side. There will be a new race course.  The course will run from the National Infantry Museum on the Riverwalk to Rotary Park (Bulldog Marina) and return on the Riverwalk to the National Infantry Museum to complete the 13.1 miles half marathon and the 3.1 miles 5k race.  Relay teams of two runners may also run the half marathon.

The races being discontinued in 2018 will be the full Soldier Marathon, the Kids Soldier Marathon, the Soldier Virtual Marathon, and the Soldier Hand Crank races.  Runner pushed strollers will continue to be permitted for the Soldier 5k Race in 2018 but not for the Soldier Half Marathon.

Runners also will not run on Fort Benning, Uptown Columbus or Phenix City in 2018. The reason for discontinuing the Soldier Marathon race was because planning the full distance marathon course and the other races was becoming too much a challenge for our volunteer committee and we decided it was time to retire the full marathon course, which included Fort Benning, Uptown Columbus and Phenix City as well as the other races. This new course for the Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will be much easier to manage by the volunteer race committee.

For those runners who signed up for one of the 2017 Soldier Marathon races to be run on November 18, 2017 because we previously announced this was the last year for the Soldier Marathon races, and now would rather run next year in 2018, we will offer deferrals to our runners to the 2018 race if they wish.

Registration for the 2018 Soldier Half Marathon and Soldier 5k Race will be available at the National Infantry Museum at packet pickup for the 2017 races on Friday and Saturday, November 17 and 18, 2017.

MESSAGE FROM THE RACE DIRECTOR

September 29, 2017

Message From the Race Director

September 28, 2017

Planning for the 2017 Soldier Marathon is coming along very well.  We expect another great year for the Soldier Marathon races.  In particular we are pleased to be a part of celebrating Fort Benning’s 100th year.  Beginning in October 2017 Fort Benning will commence the celebration of its Centennial Year.  Our 2017 Soldier Marathon held on November 18, 2017 will be part of that celebration.  The Fort Benning Centennial celebrations will culminate in October of 2018.

In addition the National Infantry Museum will be celebrating the opening of its Memorial to the Global War on Terrorism.  This beautiful memorial will feature one of the I-beams from the World Trade Center.  The start and finish line for the Soldier Marathon will be flanked by two beautiful memorials to those soldiers who have served our Country so well – the Viet Nam Memorial on one side and the new Global War on Terrorism Memorial on the other side.  No other race venue in America will have such an incredible start and finish line.

While I am very pleased to present this news to you, I also wish to say that after much consideration the planning committee has decided that this year in 2017 will be the last year for the Soldier Marathon.  We have loved putting on this race for the running community at large and for the National Infantry Museum and the Columbus, Fort Benning and Phenix City community in particular.  The Soldier Marathon is planned by a very large group of dedicated volunteers.  We are all runners and love running.  It has been a joy for us to plan this race.  However, there comes a point in time when it’s best to bring something to a close while it is still special.  We think that time is now.

Since this decision has just been made we are extending the September registration rates through the month of October to allow runners who wish to run the last Soldier Marathon an opportunity to register before there is a price increase.

We wish all our runners a very successful 2017 Soldier Marathon race.

My best wishes,

Cecil Cheves

Race Director

Dedication of Memorial to Global War on Terrorism set for October at NIM

August 3, 2017

A dedication date has been set for the National Infantry Museum’s new national memorial to the global war on terrorism.

According to a Wednesday press release, October 16, 2017, at 11 a.m. is the time set for the dedication for the memorial now under construction.

The memorial will include eight granite panels etched with the names of nearly 7,000 military men and women who have died in service since 9/11.

A 13-foot steel beam taken from the wreckage of the World Trade Center and donated to the museum by New York City firefighters will sit atop concrete columns representing the Twin Towers.

The memorial also will feature nine bronze figures representing an Infantry squad, illustrations of each service’s role in protecting our nation, and narrative panels chronicling the nation’s longest war.

Retired general John Abizaid will be the guest speaker for the dedication. Abizaid retired from theUnited States Army after 34 years, earning four stars and becoming the longest-serving commander of United States Central Command.

Organizers expect thousands of veterans and active duty military to attend the dedication event, along with top service commanders from each of the branches. Invitations will go out to Gold Star families across the country.

The ceremony will be a free but ticketed event. Ticketing information and additional details will be available soon at www.nationalinfantrymuseum.org.

Remembering 9/11 one stitch at a time

The 9/11 International Memorial Flag, a handmade flag honoring the victims and families of 9/11 and those fighting the Global War on Terrorism, is now on temporary display at the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center. It consists of nearly 3,000 small American flags sewn together to represent the victims of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93. It also features national flags representing the countries the victims came from, as well as flags representing first responder organizations involved in the rescue and recovery efforts. It was created by “United We Stand, United We Sew” a group of volunteers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The flag measures 22 feet by 32 feet and took five months to complete. It was unveiled in 2002 and has since traveled across the country to be displayed. Thomas McBrien, the flag’s curator, delivered it to the museum Monday afternoon.

Global War on Terrorism Monument Dedication

April 20, 2017

This Global War on Terrorism Monument will be dedicated on 9/11/17 at the National Infantry Museum. Our finish line will run between this Monument on the Global War on Terrorism, with its 6,800 names of Fallen Heroes on it since 9/11, and the Vietnam Monument, with its 50,000 plus names on it. No other start/finish line for a marathon will have such a dramatic feel of patriotism.
