Message From the Race Director
September 28, 2017
Planning for the 2017 Soldier Marathon is coming along very well. We expect another great year for the Soldier Marathon races. In particular we are pleased to be a part of celebrating Fort Benning’s 100th year. Beginning in October 2017 Fort Benning will commence the celebration of its Centennial Year. Our 2017 Soldier Marathon held on November 18, 2017 will be part of that celebration. The Fort Benning Centennial celebrations will culminate in October of 2018.
In addition the National Infantry Museum will be celebrating the opening of its Memorial to the Global War on Terrorism. This beautiful memorial will feature one of the I-beams from the World Trade Center. The start and finish line for the Soldier Marathon will be flanked by two beautiful memorials to those soldiers who have served our Country so well – the Viet Nam Memorial on one side and the new Global War on Terrorism Memorial on the other side. No other race venue in America will have such an incredible start and finish line.
While I am very pleased to present this news to you, I also wish to say that after much consideration the planning committee has decided that this year in 2017 will be the last year for the Soldier Marathon. We have loved putting on this race for the running community at large and for the National Infantry Museum and the Columbus, Fort Benning and Phenix City community in particular. The Soldier Marathon is planned by a very large group of dedicated volunteers. We are all runners and love running. It has been a joy for us to plan this race. However, there comes a point in time when it’s best to bring something to a close while it is still special. We think that time is now.
Since this decision has just been made we are extending the September registration rates through the month of October to allow runners who wish to run the last Soldier Marathon an opportunity to register before there is a price increase.
We wish all our runners a very successful 2017 Soldier Marathon race.
My best wishes,
